Now looking for a MS student to join the new lab group at the University of Missouri!
I am looking to recruit an M.S. student to work with me starting in Fall 2024 at the University of Missouri Department of Geological Sciences.
The position will be funded through teaching assistantships, so the candidate will be expected to teach during their studies. The funding through the teaching assistantships will cover tuition, benefits, and a stipend. Because this position is not tied to any specific proposal, the candidate will have some flexibility in their specific research topic, though it will fall within my own research specialties of shallow magmatic/eruptive processes. Funding for all research activities will come from internal funds.
Interested candidates are strongly encouraged to email me (rdegraff@hawaii.edu) to discuss their application and life in Missouri before submission.
More information about the Mizzou department can be found here: https://geology.missouri.edu/
Applications for the Fall 2024 semester are due January 28th. I will also be in attendance at the AGU Fall Meeting in December if interested candidates wish to speak in person, but Zoom meetings are available for all seriously interested candidates.

Graduate School Application Information
The process of applying for graduate school is not always clear, so I am providing some basic information beyond the mechanics of the process that can be found on the Mizzou geology department webpage.
Most importantly, make sure to email your prospective advisor ahead of time. Almost all schools will require a primary advisor for any admitted student, and whether an advisor is accepting students depends entirely on whether they have funding. For this application cycle, I only have funding to accept 1 MS student. Because the funds are so restricted, it would be in any potential applicant's best interest to contact me ahead of time so that we can chat. This allows me to assess the prospective student's interests and goals, and allows the prospective student to gain a sense of what I will be like as an advisor. Both of these aspects are critical for successfully completing a graduate degree. And I want all of my students to be successful! Graduate school applications take so many resources, both time and money, and I do not want any prospective students to waste either on an application if we are not a good fit for whatever reason.
When preparing the documents for your application, make sure to have someone with experience review them (and give that person plenty of time in advance of the deadline to do so, ~1.5-2 weeks) so that they can ensure you are submitting the strongest possible application.
If you have any questions or need clarification on anything while preparing your application, do not hesitate to reach out!
